A system for the automatic detection of hazardous events at railway level crossings, particularly cases where a road user becomes trapped between closed barriers. The system monitors the crossing area, signalling status, and barrier position in real time and, once the barriers are lowered, detects the presence of vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians within the hazard zone. Detection is performed using two independent sensing channels – cameras and LiDARs – which improves detection reliability and reduces the number of false alarms. When a hazardous situation is detected, the system generates an alarm signal and may also record evidentiary material documenting the event and vehicle identification data for use by authorised authorities.
